Raccoon invades the field during NYCFC’s victory over the Union

New York City FC and the Philadelphia Union faced a furry invader in Wednesday night’s match at Subaru Park.

A raccoon – nicknamed “Raquinho” – entered the field during the first half of NYCFC’s 2-1 victory over the Union, delaying the game by approximately 161 seconds. according to MLS Communications.

The creature entered the field in the 21st minute, making its way into the penalty area on the NYCFC side before appearing to join in the action on the other side of the field where New York completed a throw-in. game.

Raquinho then ran to the other end of the pitch before stadium staff attempted to corral the creature using empty bins.

“You thought (Lionel) Messi’s games had invaders on the pitch,” joked former MLS player Calen Carr on the Apple TV+ show.

The hilarious sequence continued as the raccoon returned to the other end of the field, where the drama really began, as the creature was surrounded by stadium staff desperately trying to catch it so the game could continue.

“It’s wonderful entertainment,” said playmaker Callum Williams, recounting the surreal scene.

The raccoon was cheered loudly by the Union supporters section as it was carried off the field in the trash can.

NYCFC also had some fun with the absurdity by posting a raccoon meme on social media.

Los Templados, one of NYCFC’s supporters groups, shared another meme on their Instagram depicting a raccoon holding up a New York City jersey.

NYCFC picked up a big win Wednesday night as they head into the first leg of the Hudson River Derby on Saturday when the Red Bulls visit Citi Field.

Alonso Martínez gave NYCFC the lead with a goal in the second minute, and Hannes Wolf extended the lead with a goal in the 45th minute.

Wednesday marked the first time this season that NYCFC won back-to-back road games.
