Quinn Ewers is passing up big money to enter the 2025 NFL Draft.
The former Texas quarterback turned down an $8 million NIL offer to transfer to another school to play out his final season of NCAA eligibility, 247Sports reported Thursday.
The report did not specify which school made the offer.
The reasoning behind this decision comes from his desire to leave Texas in a good position and feeling ready to take the next step and turn professional.
247Sports reported that NFL scouts told the outlet that they anticipated Ewers to be taken somewhere between the end of the first round and the beginning of the third round.
“Texas was the only place he wanted to play college football,” Ewers high school coach Riley Dodge told the outlet. “He wanted to leave Texas in good standing.”
Ewers completed 293 passes in his final season with the Longhorns for 3,472 yards and 31 touchdowns.
He leaves Texas as the school’s fourth all-time winningest quarterback with 27 wins, tied with Sam Ehlinger.
He trails only Colt McCoy, Vince Young and Bobby Layne.
Ewers announced he would enter the draft on Wednesday and hinted he would not return to Texas next season when he spoke with ESPN before the Cotton Bowl.
The QB also expressed that he wants his legacy at Texas to be that of an outstanding teammate.
“A great teammate who pushed his teammates to be the best they could be, but pushed himself to be the best he could be, so he’s able to say things like that. And, you know, he’s one of the best to ever do it here,” he said.
Despite the noble reasoning behind his decision to declare for the draft, he was criticized for his decision.
College football analyst and former Florida State quarterback Danny Kanell called the move “the worst financial decision.”
“If Quinn Ewers turned down $8 million to play college football in 2025, it would be the worst financial decision we’ve seen since Ronald Wayne left Apple as a co-founder, just 12 days after founding the company with Steve Jobs,” he wrote. x.
A first-round pick is expected to get a four-year contract worth $42.2 million toward the upper end of the round and $13.2 million toward the bottom, according to 247Sports.
The value continues to drop as the player is selected in the draft.
