The Trump administration has published a FAQ to clarify the issues concerning the delayed resignation offer made to federal workers this week, granting eight months of salary to workers who choose to resign.

The personnel management office launched the FAQ page after the “Road fork” note raised questions and confusion among federal workers. The offer is an unprecedented effort to reduce the size of the federal government.

During the weekend, the office has updated its website to provide more details on the resignation offer. This article has been updated to reflect the latest information, from Sunday evening.

    Will federal employees be required to work after accepting the delayed resignation offer?

  • A:

    The OPM said that federal workers do not work if they take the offer and are encouraged to find jobs in the private sector or to take prolonged holidays.

    “The way to greater American prosperity is to encourage people to go from lower productivity jobs in the public sector to higher productivity jobs in the private sector,” said the FAQ.

    Who is eligible for deferred resignation?

  • A:

    The FAQ said that deferred resignation is open to all full -time federal employees, exceptions for the military, the American postal service, the application of immigration and national security, and posts specifically excluded by the Agencies.

    The federal government employs more than 3 million people in November 2024, representing almost 1.9% of the country’s civil workforce, according to the Pew Research Center. Experts said that even a small number of resignations could lead to general disturbances throughout society.

    Everett Kelley, head of the US Federation of Government Employees, said the offer could lead to “vast involuntary consequences that will cause the chaos of the Americans who depend on a functional federal government”.

    How do workers know that their resignation has been accepted and is there an official agreement that can be signed?

  • A:

    Workers will receive a confirmation email describing the next steps in the space of 72 hours. But, given the volume of emails, OPM said that employees should keep a copy of the resignation email.

    With regard to an official agreement, it is the responsibility of the Federal Workers’ Agency to execute the official documents detailing the terms.
