Putin’s ex-classmate gets Russia’s Supreme Court top job – POLITICO

Podnosova, who previously served as deputy chairman of the Supreme Court, was named on April 1 as the sole candidate for the post after the death of Vyacheslav Lebedev, who had served as chairman of the Supreme Court since 1991.

She was nominated by a panel of judges for the post – the highest position in the Russian federal judiciary – on Monday after just 10 minutes of deliberation, Novaya Gazeta reported.

Podnosova and Putin studied law at Leningrad State University, graduating in 1975.

Podnosova received unanimous support from all 167 senators in the Federation Council – sufficient proof for the Kremlin that there is “no gender inequality” in Russia, Putin spokesman Dmitry said Peskov.

In February, Ukraine sanctioned Podnosova for ensuring “subordination of the formally independent judiciary” to Russian leaders and for supporting the invasion of Ukraine as a member of the Supreme Court.
