More than three years after the start of the large -scale invasion of Moscow from Ukraine, Putin offered direct Zelenskyy -style talks this week “without any prerequisite”. Zelenskyy called Putin’s bluff-but added that Ukraine will only accept peace talks if the Kremlin accepts a 30-day ceasefire, a proposal that the United States made two months ago.
Russia seems little likely to accept the ceasefire, but Zelenskyy can present itself for talks anyway.
“What the Americans are trying to do is really keeping the door open, so that Russia comes to the table. This may not have exerted too much pressure on Russia. But now that is more than 60 days, and we have to see other steps, so that you can see Putin around this negotiating table,” Kallas said on Tuesday.
The former Estonian Prime Minister also stressed that nothing should be discussed on Ukraine without Ukraine. “If we see (Russia and the United States) accept things that are completely unacceptable for Ukraine, or for Europe elsewhere, then that can’t really steal,” she said.
