US presidential candidate says he doesn’t know why Putin ‘backed’ his rival

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has said he is “very offended” when Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke out in support of his election rival, US Vice President Kamala Harris.

Asked at an international economic forum in Vladivostok on Thursday whether he had “a favorite” During the US elections, Putin said he would follow Biden’s endorsement in favor of Harris and “I will support her as well.”

Putin also said that “Trump has imposed more sanctions on Russia than any president before him,” and suggested that Harris “I might refrain from such actions.”

Speaking at a campaign rally in the Wisconsin town of Mosinee on Saturday, Trump blasted the White House for what he called false claims of Russian interference in the election.



“Oh no, it’s Russia, Russia, Russia again and again.” Trump said, insisting that the conflict in Ukraine would never have happened if he had been president at the time.

“I knew Putin. I knew him well. And you know, he supported – I don’t know if you saw the other day – he supported Kamala,” Trump continued. “I was very offended by that. I wonder why he supported Kamala.” He described Putin as “a chess player” and said he wondered if he had talked about Harris “with a smile.”

Some American news outlets, including CNN, have suggested that the Russian leader was “just trolling” Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to elaborate on what the president meant, saying that U.S. domestic politics were not a priority issue for the Kremlin.

Harris herself has not commented on the matter, while the White House has said Putin “should not be favorable” any candidate.

During his re-election campaign, Trump repeatedly claimed that he would quickly organize new peace negotiations between Moscow and kyiv and resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict. “in 24 hours.” The Kremlin remains skeptical, however, with Peskov recently saying that Trump had “No magic wand” and that the United States should first stop sending weapons to Ukraine.
