Putin did not order the death of Alexei Navalny in the Arctic Gulag (WSJ)

Despite the suspicious circumstances of the opposition leader’s death, the outlet reported that Putin may not have intended for Navalny to be killed when he was.

The Journal, citing “people familiar with the matter,” reported that several U.S. intelligence agencies, including the CIA, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the State Department’s intelligence unit, share this view.

None of the intelligence agencies cited by the Journal or the Pentagon responded to Business Insider’s requests for comment.

While the Journal reported that U.S. intelligence sources believed the timing of Navalny’s death — which came as his aides claimed he was about to be released — was not specifically planned by Putin, the media noted that the Russian president was not entirely exonerated from responsibility in this matter.
