A federal judge has allowed Purdue Pharma LP and the owners of the Sackler family to appeal a decision overturning their $ 4.5 billion settlement of thousands of lawsuits related to the painkiller OxyContin of the bankrupt company and its role in the opioid crisis.

Purdue has until Jan. 17 to apply for an expedited appeal to the U.S. Circuit’s Second Court of Appeals, U.S. District Judge Colleen McMahon of the Southern District of New York has ruled.
