Punchestown Festival, Day 5 (Saturday): Horse racing tips from Ed Quigley

Top tipster and broadcaster, Ed ‘Longshot Ted’ Quigley is in stunning form and offers his best bets for the final day of the 2024 Punchestown Festival…

Ted’s tips for the Punchestown festival for Saturday May 4.

Punchestown 3.05 – Bowtogreatness in each direction

Ben Pauling has had a stellar season, as has owner Harry Redknapp, and they will be looking for more success here with ARC SIZE. Connections tasted success at the Cheltenham Festival this term, and they hope their 8-year-old can add to the list here. It’s been a bit of a frustrating time for the gelding, who has had some good losing runs this season, most notably when he finished third at Kempton on his penultimate start in a hot Handicap Chase.

Softened to a 130 rating for this mission, he appears to have strong claims in each direction as he tackles this marathon journey for the first time. Ben Jones is in the saddle for Cotswolds manager, and that combination can be shaken up here at a one-way price.

Punchestown 4.15 – Minella Crooner andin each direction

The wheels came off during MINELLA CROONNEUSE of late, but he may be tempted at a cost to get back to winning ways by returning to Punchestown. Recent form numbers don’t inspire him, but he has two wins on the track – including course and distance, so this 8-year-old blowing hot and cold could easily bounce back to a venue we we know he appreciates it.

Reduced to 142, he is starting to look dangerously handicapped as a winner of a Listed Chase earlier in the season. If the rain comes, it will only strengthen his claims, and I won’t rule out a revival from this talented guy. Sam Ewing is in the saddle for Gordon Elliott’s team, and they get the nod from me as a value play in this wide-open encounter.

Punchestown 5.25 – Encanto Bruno ein each direction

It’s been a stop-start season for ENCANTO BRUNO, who has not been firing on all cylinders since his victory at the October Cheltenham meeting. However, there have been valid excuses since, where a combination of Proving Ground, Level 1 and Descent into Travel didn’t suit him at all.

Coming back to the extended distance of 2m4f can only play to his strengths, and I can see him running a massive race in Handicap company on a mark of 139. This is the first race in 6 months that he has a realistic chance of winning. , and the connections hope that heavy rains do not materialize, because the better the soil, the better the chances. Sean Flanagan takes over at the 6-year-old, and a big run could easily be on the cards for backers in either direction.
