E. coli is a potentially fatal bacteria which can cause dehydration, high fever, vomiting, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Symptoms generally appear three to four days after swallowing bacteria, and most people recover without treatment after five to seven days. However, some people who come into contact with E. coli may develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome. This condition can affect people of all ages, but is the most frequent in children under the age of five and in the elderly. It is marked by easy bruising, pallor and a decrease in urine flow. Anyone concerned about a disease must contact a health care provider.
