PS6 release date announced for 2027, cheaper but less powerful than the next Xbox

To quote PlayStation console architect Mark Cerny in a recent AMD video, the next generation is only “a few years away.” And it looks like the target – in line with previous console release cycles – is 2027.

We’re starting to get fairly regular and frequent leaks regarding the future format from a handful of sources, with KeplerL2 – a notorious snoop over the years – stating “that’s the plan (to release the PS6 in 2027) unless unexpected delays arise.”

This would fit perfectly with what Cerny himself said and would be consistent with the PS4’s seven-year cycle.

There was some debate recently about whether Microsoft would even have a new console, but the company refuted reports that it canceled its hardware plans last weekend.

Now, a Law Is Dead leak from YouTuber Moore claims that Xbox is Also plans to roll out a new device in 2027, even if it will be a traditional console or some sort of hybrid PC.

According to hardware leaks from the aforementioned source – who accurately revealed the makeup of the PS5 Pro – the next Xbox (if it hits the market) will be ready to pack more power than the PS6, but will also likely be considerably more expensive.

Obviously, we’ll have to wait and see what real advantages Microsoft’s hardware has over Sony’s efforts and how much it all actually matters.

Many fans feel like we’ve already reached the point of diminishing returns, so a few more images for potentially hundreds of dollars may not be a compelling proposition – especially when retailers start to withdraw Microsoft’s current effort, the Xbox Series X|S, in stores.

To be honest, we’re still at least 18 months away from knowing each manufacturer’s next-gen plans, and a lot could change in that time. Even though we’re at that point in the cycle where these rumors won’t go away, we imagine most of the details are still evolving.

Indeed, specifications, clock speeds, release dates and prices could all change before launch. So it’s interesting to follow these rumors – and we’ll of course continue to keep you updated on what we know – but it may not be worth thinking about it too much until a lot of these details are locked down.

In the meantime, what do you think of a 2027 release date for the PS6? Will you be there from day one, or does it all depend on price and software? Let us know in the comments section below.
