Protesters in Israel require a hostage agreement in one of the largest demonstrations since the start of the Gaza conflict

Sunday, large crowds of Israelis came down to the street, launching a basic strike on a national scale and generalized demonstrations to demand that the government guarantee the release of 50 hostages still in Gaza.

In one of the biggest demonstrations coordinated since the start of the Gaza War almost two years ago, demonstrators blocked large roads, closed private companies and organized gatherings in major cities.

People have also demonstrated outside the houses of the Minister of the Government. The organizers estimated that hundreds of thousands participated in the strike through Israel.

The day of the protests began at 06:29, the exact time when Hamas launched its fatal attack against Israel on October 7.

The members of the hostage family, leading the strike alongside the October Council, which represents the bereaved war families, held a press conference in Tel Aviv, announcing an “emergency break” until the release of the hostages.

“Today, we stop everything to save the life of 50 hostages and soldiers. Today, we stop everything to remember the supreme value of the holiness of life,” said Anat Engrast, whose Matan son, is held hostage in Gaza.

The demonstrators block the Ayalon access road on Sunday in Tel Aviv in Israel.

Surveys have shown several times a large majority in Israel supports a cease-fire agreement to release all hostages in exchange for a war. The last series of negotiations collapsed at the end of July, when the United States and Israel withdrew their talks from Doha, accusing Hamas of not negotiating in good faith.

“We are united in a simple request directed against the Israeli government: put an Israeli proposal on the table today for a full case – to end the war in exchange for the return of the last hostage. No slogans, no sabotage, no requests that we know the other side will not accept,” said Vicky Cohen, whose son Nimrod is a hospital. “It’s time to put an end to the horrible nightmare across the country throughout the country for 22 months.”

The strike was announced last week, following the Israeli security firm to extend the war and resume the city of Gaza, despite the Israeli army warning that operations could endanger the 50 remaining hostages in Gaza, 20 of which would still be alive.

The Israeli army claims that the operation will begin “soon” and the government says that it will provide the local populations with tents before moving them “for their protection”. Almost the entire population of Gaza has been moved, with many things forced to move several times.

As early as Sunday afternoon, Israeli police said 38 demonstrators had been arrested across the country for disrupting peace.

The police disperse demonstrators blocking a road during a demonstration in Jerusalem on Sunday.

The largest work organization in Israel, The Histadrut, has not joined the strike, although it encouraged employers to let the workers participate. But many technological companies, law firms, university establishments and private sector companies have announced their participation and support, alongside citizens who said they would take the day of leave or refrain from commercial transactions.

Israeli president Isaac Herzog expressed support for hostage families when visiting the central gathering at Hotages Square in Tel Aviv. “All the inhabitants of Israel are anxious, worried and want the hostages to come home. There is not a single woman or an Israeli man who does not want them,” said Herzog.

But members of the Israeli government have criticized demonstrations.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a meeting of the cabinet: “Those who call today to end war without defeating Hamas not only hardening the position of Hamas and delaying the release of our hostages – they also ensure that the horrors of October 7 will repeat themselves and again.”

Itamar Ben Gvir, the far-right minister of national security, said that the strike was a “cynical political maneuver on the back of the hostages”, linking it to the long-standing anti-government protest movement.

The Smarting and Family Forum, which represents most of the hostages that remain in Gaza, said in response: “You can continue to hide behind tricks and political calculations, but you cannot escape responsibility.”

The forum announced its intention to create a protest camp on the Gaza border called “Waypoint 50” – representing the 50 hostages – to continue to put pressure on the government to guarantee its release.
