Promising Mets prospect Calvin Ziegler needs Tommy John surgery
An exciting Mets pitching prospect has encountered another injury setback.
Calvin Ziegler is essentially facing a second straight losing season and will need Tommy John surgery, a source confirmed.
The right-hander, who is the Mets’ eighth-ranked pitching prospect according to MLB Pipeline, pitched just one inning last season after bone spur surgery and then tore his quad during rehab.
Ziegler returned to the Low-A St. Lucie mound in September and struck out all three batters he faced.
He returned this season with a lot of hype that picked up after his debut with High-A Brooklyn by pitching four perfect innings and striking out nine. At one point, he struck out eight batters in a row.
But he lasted just two hitless innings in his second start of the season Sunday and exited early with an injury that will again mean his season is over.
Ziegler, a 21-year-old Canadian, was a second-round pick in 2021.
Metsmerized initially reported that he would need surgery.
