Project Hail Mary looks like the science fiction film event in 2026

2025 has many excellent films still on the way, but Wednesday evening in Cinemacon, MGM played the first images of what could end up being the science fiction event of 2026: Hail Mary project.

Based on a novel by Martian Author Andy Weir, Hail Mary project is led by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, the film Lego) And although it will not be released before March 2026, we saw an prolonged trailer that set the tone, exposed the story and teases it which makes it such a special story.

In the images, we meet Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, university professor at what seems to be a rather small school. A woman named Eva (Sandra Hüller) enters her class and asks him if he has written a specific article. He said he did it, but he was dismissed for it. Well, it seems, his theories could be useful because the rumors that everyone heard on earth are true. The sun is dying. He is taken by Eva to help.

“It’s Project Hail Mary,” says Eva while she and Ryland enter a massive room filled with very intelligent people. Later, Eva explains that the sun is not the only star who dies. Many stars all show an infection scheme through the universe, except one. A plan is in place, but Ryland can hardly believe it, so he presents it. This involves near speed trips that do not exist and browse so many kilometers, astronauts will never return to them. He said it was that the whole world dies.

“Who will register for this?” Request Ryland. And everyone is calm, looking at him. He cannot believe it. He’s not an astronaut, but Eva says they say they don’t need an astronaut, they need an expert. “I put the” step “in the astronaut,” he said. “You have the right things, but I have bad things.”

As you can guess, Ryland goes into space anyway. There are super cool images of the ship in a deep and dark. He wakes up in a sleep with a big beard. We see him do a lot of strange stuff on the ship. It floats in space for a second. Finally, the ship enters a shimmering pink area and, on the other side, we see another spacecraft.

This other ship seems to be almost made of wood. Very fine and sharp pieces of wood, all stacked on each other. He slows down next to the Ryland ship. Out draws a small cylinder. Ryland panic that the ship sends him something. He thinks it’s a bomb but, when he simply bounces his ship, he realizes that it is a message.

We see that the ships connect and Ryland entering the extraterrestrial ship, which is much more biological than that of Ryland. “Someone at home?” He asks when he falls under a light. But then the light comes back. He arrives at a window at the end of the tunnel and a hand with two fingers touches the window.

Cut to Ryland by making a video. “So, I met an extraterrestrial,” he says. “And he grows up on me. Not in me, which was at some point a concern. ” There are a few other photos of Ryland who work with the extraterrestrial even if we do not see it, and that’s it.

It was a prolonged trailer which certainly seemed that it was a large part of the film but, after reading the book, it is only about half. It goes much more, and we can’t wait to see everything playing everything. He opened on March 20, 2026.
