Progressives withdraw letter urging Biden to negotiate with Putin, say publication was a mistake

The Congressional Progressive Caucus on Tuesday withdrew its letter urging President Biden to negotiate with Russia over the war in Ukraine after it sparked a backlash among fellow Democrats.

CPC Chair Pramila Jayapal, a Democrat from Washington, said the letter “was written several months ago, but unfortunately was posted by staff without verification.”

Ms Jayapal, who plans to become leader of the House Democrats next year, said she accepted responsibility for the decision.

She said due to the timing, the letter was ‘confused’ with recent comments by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Republican of California, which were interpreted as suggesting a possible end to US aid to Ukraine if the GOP takes control of the House.

Mr McCarthy said the United States should not issue a “blank cheque” for additional funding from Ukraine.

Democrats took advantage of Mr McCarthy’s comments to call the party “Putin’s Republicans”.
