Scottsdale, Arizona (AP) – At least one person was killed and others were injured when private planes collided on Monday afternoon at Scottsdale airport in Arizona, authorities announced.
A medium -sized business plane collided with another medium -sized business jet that was parked on private property, according to Kelli Kuester, aviation planning coordinator and awareness at airport of Scottsdale. The Federal Aviation Administration said that the private jet that collided with the parked plane had left the track.
Among the wounded, two were taken to trauma centers and one was in a stable state in a hospital, said Captain Dave Folio, Captain of Scottsdale firefighters. He said that a person was always trapped in one of the planes and that “we do everything we can to extract and save the only soul that is always on board”.
“Our thoughts and prayers go to everyone involved in this,” said Folio.
The track has been closed and will remain closed “in the foreseeable future,” said Kuester.
The airport is a popular hub for jets that enter and leave the Phoenix region, especially during major sports weekends such as the Open Golf Tournament for Waste Management, which attracts a huge crowd to a few kilometers from there.
The Scottsdale collision comes after three major American aeronautical disasters in the past two weeks. A commercial jetliner and an army helicopter collided near the national capital on January 29, killing 67 people. A medical transport plane crashed in Philadelphia on January 31, killing the six people on board and another person on the ground. And last week, a small suburban plane crashed in the west of Alaska on its way to the community of Nome Hub, killing the 10 people on board.
