Prince William will go to the Vatican and attend the funeral of Pope Francis on behalf of the British royal family later this week. And if you wonder why King Charles does not participate, he is literally not authorized.
Royal Katie Nicholl expert writes in Vanity That King Charles “will not go to the Vatican, in accordance with the protocol and the priority which dictates that the sovereign does not attend the funeral, confirmed the palace of Buckingham”. And this is not the first time that an heir attests to the funeral of a pope on behalf of the sovereign – in 2005, then Prince Charles attended the funeral of Pope John Paul II in the name of Queen Elizabeth.
That said, King Charles visited the Pope just a few days before his recent death, and he published a statement after his death.
“My wife and I were very deeply saddened to learn the death of Pope Francis,” said Charles. “Our heavy hearts have been somewhat attenuated, however, that His Holiness was able to share an Easter greeting with the Church and the world he served with such devotion throughout his life and his ministry.”
“His holiness will remain in the memories for his compassion, his concern for the unity of the Church and for his tireless commitment to the common causes of all peoples of faith, and for those of the goodwill that work for the benefit of others,” he added. “His belief according to which the care of creation is an existential expression of faith in God resonated with so many people around the world. Thanks to his work and his care both for people and the planet, he deeply touched the lives of so many people.”
