LONDON (AP) – Prince William said on Monday that his grandfather Prince Philip was “fine” as the 99-year-old royal husband was staying in a London hospital to rest and be watched.

William was asked about Philip during his visit to a coronavirus vaccination center in eastern England.

“Yes, he’s fine, they’re keeping an eye on him,” William said, and winked at him.

Philip was admitted to King Edward VII private hospital in London on Tuesday after falling ill. Buckingham Palace has said Queen Elizabeth II’s husband is to stay in hospital this week for a “watch and rest” period.

Philip’s illness is believed to be unrelated to COVID-19. He and the Queen, 94, received a first dose of a coronavirus vaccine in early January.

Philip, who retired from public service in 2017, rarely appears in public. During the current coronavirus lockdown in England, Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, stayed at Windsor Castle, west London, with the Queen.

Philip married then-Princess Elizabeth in 1947 and is the longest-serving royal consort in British history. He and the Queen have four children, eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
