Over the past three years, presidents, prime ministers, cinema actors, rock stars and writers have visited Ukraine, seeking to show solidarity with a assaual country made of its neighbor, Russia. Add Prince Harry to this list.
On Thursday, Harry, the youngest son of King Charles III, made an unexpected visit to the city of Lviv in western Ukraine, where he visited a rehabilitation center for the military and civilian victims of the conflict. He spoke with patients and staff members, according to a spokesperson for his office.
Harry’s office only confirmed the visit after leaving Ukraine, reflecting the fact that Lviv is always periodically targeted with missiles by Russia. Earlier this week, he was in London for a court hearing in a dispute over the withdrawal of security funded by taxpayers for him and his family when they visit Great Britain.
Harry’s visit to the rehabilitation clinic is in accordance with one of his most expensive causes: war victims. Fighter veteran himself, he founded The Invictus Games, a sports competition for the injured military veterans in 2014. He was joined during the visit by a delegation from the Invictus Games Foundation, after being invited by Olga Rudneva, the director general of the clinic, known as the superhuman center.
The center offers reconstructive surgery, prostheses and psychological advice – free of charge – to war victims. During his tour, in which Harry spoke to an injured child and men who had lost members, he also met the Ukraine Minister of Veterans, Natalia Kalmykova.
Harry’s trip coincided with the end of a four -day state visit to Italy by Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla. This raised questions about the perspective among some royal observers, who noted that members of the royal family generally avoid monarchs during their trips abroad. The Buckingham Palace has not commented.
