Prince Harry and Matt Damon to address elites at Clinton Global Initiative
What do Prince Harry and Hollywood hero Matt Damon know about the virtues of hard work? Can they shed light on climate change, global health, gun violence, and a path forward for humanity that will defeat inequality once and for all?
The Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), which will meet in New York on September 23-24, believes it has a lot to offer. That’s why it will be reaching out to the gilded elite at the 2024 edition of the annual event.
A subset of the Clinton Foundation, the CGI “brings together global and emerging leaders to create and implement solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges,” according to its website.
AP reports that the overarching theme of the 2024 gathering of political, business and philanthropic leaders is “What Works” — an effort to highlight potential solutions and effective aid in a world marked by war, rising Income inequality And food insecurity.
Former President Bill Clinton has revealed that this year’s Clinton Global Initiative will “redouble our efforts” to increase progress on a range of important issues.
“We started CGI because we wanted to have a meeting where people wouldn’t just talk about big problems, but where we could roll up our sleeves and make things happen,” he said in a statement to The Associated Press. “It’s more important than ever to be optimistic and realize that we all have the ability to make a difference.”
The Duke of Sussex plans to discuss the launch of the Archewell Foundation’s Parents Network, an initiative designed to support parents whose children have suffered or died as a result of online harm.
He also plans to discuss his nonprofit’s collaboration with the World Health Organization and others to end violence against children, an issue he and his wife Meghan highlighted during a recent trip to Colombia.
Oscar-winning actor Damon, meanwhile, is expected to discuss the progress of the $1 billion plan he announced in 2022 to give 100 million people in Africa, Asia and Latin America sustainable access to water and sanitation.
Business leaders expected to attend the conference, which runs concurrently with the week of the United Nations General Assembly, include Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Past events have featured celebrity speakers and top business executives such as Ben Affleck, Bono and former Presidents Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter.
The initiative was also sponsored by major companies, such as Coca-Cola, Barclays, Goldman Sachs, Blackstone Group, Laureate Education, Monsanto and Standard Chartered Bank.
