Primark’s longtime CEO, Paul Marchant resigned from his role in force immediately after admitting an “error of judgment,” the company announced on Monday.
Walking, who took the mark of the fashion retailer based in Dublin, Ireland in 2009, left after the company launched an investigation into “an allegation made by an individual on his behavior towards her in a social environment,” said Primark, Associated British Foods in a press release.
The former managing director cooperated in the investigation and admitted that “his actions fell below the standards expected by ABF,” said the company. Marking also apologized to the individual who filed the complaint, as well as the Board of Directors of the ABF and his colleagues from Primark, added the company.
“I am extremely disappointed,” said George Weston, Managing Director of ABF, in a statement.
“At ABF, we believe that high integrity standards are essential. Acting responsible is the only way to create and manage a long-term business. Colleagues and others must be treated with respect and dignity,” he added.
Primark did not immediately respond to the request for comments from the position.
Marchant was appointed Managing Director by Arthur Ryan, who founded Primark in Dublin in 1969.
The fast fashion retailer, which sells clothes, home products and beauty at ultra-basic costs, is a basic food in the cities of Great Britain and Ireland.
It has more than 450 stores in 17 countries, including at least 29 locations in the United States.
Primark continues to develop, after having signed 17 leases for future American storefronts.
“Under the leadership of Paul, Primark has become a truly international company,” said a biography of walking on the Primark website. “He has managed our European and American expansion, more than double our store imprint since his participation.”
During his last financial year ended in September 2024, the retailer declared sales of 9.4 billion pounds, or 12.2 billion dollars – a leap of 5% compared to the previous year.
ABF will report its provisional financial results as scheduled on April 29, said the company.
Eoin Tonge, ABF finance director, will act as an acting executive officer in Primark, according to the press release.
