Former Rep. Joe Cunningham, DS.C., told CNN’s “New Day” Thursday that President Biden should retire, believing he was too old to run for re-election.

Cunningham previously released a campaign video attacking politicians who remain in power “long after their peak”, appearing to include President Biden.

“But have you ever noticed that politicians almost never retire? Our country and our state is run by a geriatric oligarchy,” Cunningham said in the ad.

CNN co-host John Berman asked Cunningham to clarify whether he considered President Biden, who turns 80 in the fall, too old for the job.

“I think what people hate about politics and politicians is the inconsistency. And the hypocrisy. And, you know, we look at the White House, and see President Biden, think about what will look like the future and a new generation of leaders and, listen, if President Biden was here with me right now and asking my opinion, whether or not he should run for another term, or whether he should step down and enabling a new generation of leaders to emerge, I would tell him the latter,” Cunningham said.

“You think Joe Biden is too old to run for re-election, is that what you’re saying?” Berman asked.

“Yeah,” Cunningham replied. “I think we need a new generation of leaders to emerge.”

He later explained, “I think we need to have a new vision, new leadership and it’s not personal about Biden, but he’ll be 82 by the time of the next election. If he’s served a second mandate, he’ I’ll be 86. I don’t know if any of us know 86-year-olds who should be running the whole country.

Although Cunningham cited his Republican rival Gov. Henry McMaster, who is 75, as an example, he also recognized Rep. Jim Clyburn, DS.C., who is 81, as another politician expected to retire , after Berman raised him.

“I appreciate his services [Clyburn] and what he has done for our country and that is nothing personal. I get on well with him. But as we look to the future, we must seek to provide a new vision,” Cunningham said.
