Prague hospital performs abortion on expecting mother in horrifying mix-up

A four-month pregnant woman suffered an unwanted abortion at a Prague hospital after confusion among patients.

The woman went to Bulovka University Hospital on March 25, where she expected to undergo a routine examination.

The doctors confused her with another patient, both Asian, who did not speak Czech well.

The woman was placed under anesthesia and doctors then performed curettage, a type of surgery on the uterus. After the procedure, the woman suffered a miscarriage.

Gynecologist and vice-president of the Czech Medical Chamber Jan Přáda said the language barrier would likely have been a factor in the horror confusion.

“A Czech-speaking patient would probably actively resist undergoing a procedure that she does not understand,” Přáda told Czech media Seznam Zpravy.

The medical professionals involved in the incident have been suspended from their duties, Daily Mail reported.

A hospital spokesperson said: “Based on the results obtained so far, following a serious violation of the internal regulations on the part of the employees concerned, the surgical intervention was initiated on the incorrectly identified patient.

“If violations of mandatory work procedures are revealed in the ongoing internal investigation, certain individuals will be held personally responsible.”
