Hold on to your seats – there could be a potential secret mechanism that would allow Critical catches to be guaranteed in Pokémon GO!
An article on Reddit titled “Critical capture confirmed” was released yesterday and is currently under active investigation and verification, but coaches have discovered that there may be a way to guarantee critical catches, i.e. a rate of 100% capture for any wild Pokémon.
Apparently if you hit a great throw at a Pokémon in the smallest circle possibleit will guarantee a critical capture, 100% of the time, on standard Pokémon that you may encounter in the wild.
The original poster shared some videos of this mechanic in play, and judging by early efforts to verify The Silph Road’s research, it appears to be true and repeatable:
If you want to try this for yourself, we recommend trying this with Pokémon like Mamoswine, which have larger catch circles, and it is very easy to land this throw compared to other Pokémon.
The investigation is still ongoing, but the first comments are reassuring:
- “Yeah. I saw this post and immediately thought it was bs, but I went and tried it anyway because it’s pretty easy to disprove (just get a small circle that isn’t critical). I hit the smallest circle on a Delibird and it gave a critical hit, so I kept trying to hit it on a Sneasel and an Eevee. Both scored a critical take, so honestly I’m starting to think it has merit. At the very least, it could give more chances of getting critical captures.» – source
- “After reading the OP and a post below, I opened PoGo and started screen recording (you can see the mons appear in the first few frames of the video). I missed the excellent on the first attempt, so I tried again, landed the excellent throw in the smallest possible window (or very close to it) and got a critical catch. – source
It is still unclear whether this is a new mechanism, or has just been discovered, but it is very exciting to see some developments in our understanding of capture mechanisms.
Why is this so important?
To understand the truth of this statement, it is essential to look at how Pokémon GO’s capture mechanics work. Generally, the game uses a random algorithm that determines whether a Pokémon is captured. Factors such as the type of Pokéball used, the Pokémon’s catch rate, and the accuracy of the throw (nice, great, or excellent) influence this algorithm.
However, nowhere in the official game mechanics is it mentioned that a certain type of throw guarantees a critical capture.
What is a critical capture?
A critical capture in Pokémon GO is a rare event where the Pokéball only shakes once on the ground before the Pokémon is caught, greatly reducing the suspense and uncertainty of the capture process. These events are generally considered random, with no known player action to reliably influence their occurrence.
And if it was true ?
If this theory really holds water, it would literally be a game changer. This could add a whole new layer of skills to Pokémon GO, especially when facing Pokémon like Galarian Birds, essentially giving you a way to influence your chances of catching outside of the usual factors of berry and Poké Ball type .
How does the Pokémon GO capture formula work?
The Pokémon GO catch rate formula can be expressed as follows:
CATCH_MULTIPLIERS = ball * curve * berry * throwType * (type1Medal + type2Medal / 2)
CATCH_RATE = 1 - Math.pow(1 - baseCatchRate / (2 * cpm), CATCH_MULTIPLIERS)
As you can see, critical captures are not mentioned anywhere in the formula, but they guarantee a 100% capture rate when they occur.
