Porto’s Bakery founder dies at 92

For 40 years, Porto’s Bakery has been giving Glendale and the greater Los Angeles area a little taste of Cuba. The two-story, family-owned bakery is a place where nostalgic Cuban exiles and the rest of Los Angeles can come for Cuban lunch sandwiches, pastries and cakes. 023492.SO.0127.bakery.1 Three generations of Porto work in the Porto bakery. Raul Porto Sr., the founder of the beloved Porto’s Bakery, died Wednesday at age 92, the company announced Friday on Instagram.

“Raul Sr. was an extraordinary man who, alongside his wife Rosa, founded Porto Bakery from their family kitchen, selling cakes and pastries to friends and family. Raul Sr. helped out whenever he could, even though he worked at another local bakery. After several years, he was able to join Rosa full-time, dedicating himself to growing their business,” the caption reads in part.

The first official Porto’s Bakery storefront opened in 1976 in Echo Park. The company has grown into one of Los Angeles’ most beloved baking establishments, with six locations in Glendale, Burbank, Downey, Buena Park, West Covina and Northridge.

Rosa Porto died in 2019.

The bakery is known for selling Cuban specialties such as potato dumplings, meat pies and sandwiches, as well as baked goods such as cinnamon coffee cake and strawberry shortbread.
