“I renew my call to allow the entry of worthy humanitarian aid and put an end to hostilities, whose heartbreaking price is paid by children, the elderly and the sick.”
Pope Leo XIV made this call to the conclusion of his first general public on Place Saint-Pierre on May 21.
In his remarks to Italian pilgrims, he said: “The situation in the Gaza Strip is more and more disturbing and painful.”
The humanitarian emergency in Gaza is at a breakdown, according to international organizations. The integrated classification of the food security phase (IPC), supported by the UN, warns an imminent famine.
According to aid agencies, the Gaza humanitarian crisis has intensified while the Israeli air strikes on May 20 have resulted in many Palestinian deaths, including children, in the midst of ongoing military operations who have killed tens of thousands of people since October 2023.
Although Israel has enabled a limited number of assistance trucks to Gaza, international criticisms have set up, with calls to Israel to stop its military campaign and facilitate aid restrictions.
In addition, the United Nations expressed their concern for the unprecedented destruction of the accommodation in Gaza.
