Pope Francis warns of “global retreat from democracy”, criticizes nationalism

Pope Francis has warned the world against a “withdrawal from democracy” that is happening in Europe and other countries.

The Pope made his comments during a three-day visit to Greece, warning of nationalism and populism.

“[Democracy] is complex, while authoritarianism is peremptory and the easy answers of populism seem appealing, ”the Pope said.

The pontiff added that Europe and other places “are witnessing a decline in democracy”.

The pope’s comments follow a summit in Warsaw of nationalist leaders from countries, including France and Italy, which seeks to explore the creation of a grand coalition of such politicians.

The Pope called on the international community to reject this kind of thinking, urging action against climate change, global poverty and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Pope called on the world “to open up avenues for peace through multilateralism which will not end up being stifled by excessive nationalist demands”.
