The Vatican publishes the death certificate, Pontiff’s request to be buried at the Basilica of St Mary Major in Rome.
Pope Francis died of a brain stroke and irreversible heart failure, said the doctor of Vatican Andrea Arcangeli in a death certificate.
The certificate released on Monday for the 88 -year -old pontiff said that the Pope had fallen into a coma before his death on Monday morning.
Francis died of a “cerebral stroke, Coma, an irreversible cardiculatory collapse,” said the death certificate. He added that the first Latin American pontiff in the history of the Roman Catholic church died at 7:35 am (05:35 GMT) in his apartment at the residence of Santa Marta at the Vatican.
Just a day earlier, the pontiff made what would be his last major appearance by saluting thousands of Easter worshipers of a popemobile with a roof open in Saint-Pierre and delivered a blessing by an assistant.
Francis had undergone various diseases during its 12 -year papacy with fatal complications in recent weeks during a double pneumonia, for which he spent 38 days at the Gemelli University Hospital in Rome in February and March.
The death certificate added that Francis also suffered from high blood pressure, multiple bronchi and type 2 diabetes, conditions that had not been disclosed before.
The Vatican also released Francis’ spiritual will – a written declaration of the faith – in which he said that he wanted to be buried in the Basilica of Rome of St Mary Major and not to the Saint -Pierre basilica in the Vatican, unlike many of his predecessors.
The text specified that Francis wanted to be buried “in the ground, without any particular decoration” but with the inscription of his papal name in Latin: Franciscus.
“While I feel the twilight that approaches my earthly life, and with a firm hope in eternal life, I wish to exhibit my final wishes only concerning the place of my burial”, reads The Testament, which was dated June 29, 2022.
“May the Lord give an appropriate reward to all those who loved me and who continue to pray for me,” he said.
Prayer of the rosary
The Vatican held a rosary prayer on Monday evening on Place Saint-Pierre, his first public commemoration since the death of the Pope. Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, Archper of the Saint-Pierre Basilica, led prayer to sunset.
Sister Raffaella Petrini, president of the state of the city of the Vatican and one of the most upscale women in the Vatican, delivered the first reading. His appointment was a sign of Francis’ insistence on the fact that women receive more important decision -making roles.
Francis’ death marks the start of nine days of mourning called the Novine.
His body will be dressed in papal clothes and placed in the Saint-Pierre basilica for a vision of the public before its burial. Daily prayer services and Requiem masses will be held in Catholic churches around the world and at the Saint-Pierre basilica during this period.
The Vatican also enters a transition period called SEDE Vacante or Interregn, during which power is awarded to the Cardinal College, but no major decision will be made until the papacy is completed.
In about 15 to 20 days, cardinals under the age of 80 will meet at the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican city, which will be sealed, to elect the new pontiff by a secret ballot. Once the next pope is elected, the white smoke will emerge from the chapel chimney.
