Police under pressure over mutilated bodies in Nairobi – DW – 14/07/2024

Several women’s bodies have been found in a Nairobi slum, Kenyan police said on Sunday.

Officers have promised a “transparent” and swift investigation into the killings, saying they are considering several options including serial killers, cults and rogue doctors.

What do we know about the investigations into the bodies?

Mutilated and dismembered bodies were found in plastic bags at a dump in the Mukuru slums, south of Nairobi.

Six bodies were found on Friday and more body parts were found on Saturday, acting national police chief Douglas Kanja told a news conference. Eight bodies were found in total.

Initial investigations revealed that all the bodies were those of women.

Criminal Investigations Chief Amin Mohammed, speaking at the same press conference alongside Kanja, said the victims ranged in age from 18 to 30.

“They were badly dismembered, in various states of decomposition, and left in bags,” Kanja said.

He said investigations were ongoing.

Kanja called for public cooperation “so that we can bring to justice the perpetrators of these heinous acts.”

He said police were committed to conducting “transparent, thorough and prompt investigations” into the bodies.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja called for calm among residents in the area near the dump. The star “Altercations” with government officials have been reported.

Sakaja said the incident “hindered rescue efforts after police fired tear gas into the crowd.”

Police search for murderers

Last year, a mass grave was discovered in a forest near the Kenyan coast containing the bodies of hundreds of members of a starvation cult. On Monday, the cult leader, Paul Nthenge Mackenzie, and 94 co-defendants went on trial for the killings.

Kenya’s Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) said it was investigating whether police were involved in the dumped bodies found in Mukuru.

Kenyan police have come under increased scrutiny since dozens of people were killed during widespread anti-government protests. Acting national police chief Douglas Kanja only took office on Friday, a week after national police chief Japhet Koome resigned over the protest deaths.
