Police stabbed shopping center in Sydney

STORY: South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke said the man, identified as Joel Cauchi, 40, from Queensland, suffered from mental health issues and there was no indication that the attack was ideologically motivated. Cauchi was shot and killed by an officer who responded to the scene.

Police were called to Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center in the city’s east shortly before 4:00 p.m. (06:00 GMT) on Saturday after reports of a stabbing. Witnesses described him running around the mall with a knife, randomly attacking people. Some shoppers and mall employees tried to stop him, and the crowd took shelter in closed stores.

Cooke confirmed on Sunday that six people had been fatally stabbed, two of whom appeared to have no family in Australia. He said police were working with agencies overseas to try to contact their families.

Cooke also said a number of people remained hospitalized due to their injuries, many in “serious but stable condition,” including a young child.
