The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a ball-throwing incident involving Milwaukee Bucks guard Patrick Beverley that occurred during Game 6 of the Bucks-Pacers first-round playoff series on May 2.
A case report was filed that night after a police officer observed the interaction, and detectives are investigating the incident, a police spokesperson said. Athleticism. They are working with Gainbridge Fieldhouse to review video footage and plan to speak with those involved. The results of the investigation will be presented to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, who will decide whether to file charges.
With about two and a half minutes left in the game, Beverley threw a basketball at a fan behind him from the Milwaukee bench. He appeared to miss his target, a male Pacers fan, instead hitting a female Pacers fan in the side of the head before demanding she give him the ball back.
The man collected the ball and returned it to Beverley, who immediately returned it to the fan over the head and with both hands. The fan deflected the ball as Bucks staff and security intervened, but the fan and Beverley continued to exchange words.
According to a source who witnessed the incident and two others who were informed of it, the exchange between Beverley and one of the fans behind the bench escalated when the Bucks were breaking up a huddle and the fan yelled : “Cancun… Cancun out of 3.”
These sources indicated that obscenities were said towards Beverley before the escalation.
NBA is studying the issue, league said Athleticism Friday.
Asked about the post-match exchange, Beverley replied: “No, don’t worry about that. Nothing.” He also posted this response via social media after the match:
