An elderly woman died after the vehicle she was in was stolen from Washington Hospital Center and then crashed into a downtown Washington building Monday afternoon, police said.

A white SUV was stolen from Washington Hospital Center, in the 100 block of Irving Street, just before 1:15 p.m., according to Darnel Robinson, Washington DC deputy police chief.

The driver had gotten out of the SUV and at that point, a woman got inside and left with the driver’s elderly mother still inside, police said.

Shortly after stealing the SUV, DC police said the suspect crashed into the corner of a building between 6th Street and D Street Northwest, where the U.S. Attorney’s Office is located from DC.

A police officer driving nearby saw the crash happen in his rearview mirror, Robinson said.

“As he went to investigate, he saw the driver of that vehicle get out and try to run away,” Robinson said. “The suspect has been captured.”

The police arrested the suspect.

The building suffered superficial damage, according to DC Fire and EMS.

DC Fire and EMS initially said the passenger inside the vehicle was in “life-threatening critical condition” and the driver was outside the vehicle. Police later said the woman had died and investigators were looking into the cause of her death.

“This is a tragic event, our condolences go out to the family at this time,” Robinson said.

Police have not publicly identified the owner of the vehicle.

Some roads around the crash site are closed while police investigate, including 6th Street NW between East Street and Indiana Avenue, according to DC police. Listen to WTOP Traffic for the latest news.
