Police are searching for a man seen on CCTV after a 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped in Liverpool city center in the early hours of Friday morning.

Officers went to St John’s Gardens around 1.50am on April 12 where they found the teenager who said she had been assaulted by an unknown person.

The 16-year-old is being looked after by specially trained officers and an investigation is currently underway.

Photos from the scene showed a police cordon in place near the Gladstone Memorial, close to the King’s Liverpool Regiment war memorial.

Officers have now released CCTV footage of a man they would like to speak to as they believe he could help the investigation.

Detective Inspector Carla Cross said: “Our inquiries remain ongoing and we have released CCTV footage of a man who we believe could help us.

“We would encourage the man, or anyone recognizing him, to contact us urgently.”

“It is important that people who live, work and socialize in Liverpool city center feel safe and we hope our high visibility patrols will help with this.”

In an earlier statement, Detective Chief Inspector Paul Parry said: “This is clearly a very shocking incident which has left a young girl very distressed.

“I want the public to be reassured that we will do everything in our power to find the person responsible and bring them to justice and I urge anyone with information that could help our investigations to contact us urgently.”

“We believe there were a number of people in the vicinity of St John’s Gardens at the time of this incident who left without speaking to our patrols and I would urge them to come forward and speak to us as the information they have could be critical in helping us identify the person responsible.
