PM Update: Another scorching day Wednesday with some late thunderstorms

* Excessive heat warning until 8 p.m., and heat warning Wednesday *

Our record-breaking scorching heat continues to play out. Highs reached the upper 90s to near 100 degrees Tuesday afternoon, the fifth straight day of 97 degrees or higher in D.C. Feels-like readings were closer to 105 to 110 degrees for most of the middle and late part of the day. The city peaked at 111 degrees at 2 p.m., which was the leader in the lower 48 at that point. With high humidity firmly in place, temperatures won’t drop much Tuesday night. And we’ll be bracing for more of the same Wednesday, as a cold front knocks on the door.

Tomorrow (Wednesday): We’ll wake up to another scorching morning, as temperatures climb with the sunrise. Some clouds are expected to form by mid-day, and afternoon highs are expected to be pretty similar to Tuesday’s, with mostly mid- to highs above 90°F. There’s a better chance of scattered thunderstorms than Tuesday, and some could be strong. But it looks like they’ll stick around until late afternoon or evening.

Rain in sight? Friday offers the best chance of flooding in some time, but it’s still far from guaranteed locally. Much will depend on the exact location of the remnants of a cold front entering the region Wednesday night. That front is expected to move south and east of us through Thursday. Models suggest it will be close enough to drench the Interstate 95 area and east, but the data has shifted somewhat eastward. With a sharp drop in rain expected on the west side, any changes could cause significant changes in expectations.
