Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation on Sunday at 5 p.m. His speech will come on the eve of Navratri, the day from which cuts in the GST rate will come into effect, with a drop in prices of a large number of products. There is, however, no official word on his speech this evening.

Since taking office in 2014, the Prime Minister has addressed the nation on several occasions, often coinciding with major political decisions or national security events.

One of his most notable recent speeches took place on May 12, 2025, when he spoke about Operation Sindoor, India’s counterattack following the Pahalgam terrorist attack. His speech reaffirmed the Indian government’s commitment to national defense and rapid retaliation against threats.

Previously, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he made a series of television announcements, including on March 24, 2020, when he declared a national lockdown for three weeks, a measure aimed at curbing the spread of the virus.

It was followed by an extension announced on April 14, and later in May he presented a phased plan to ease restrictions and revive economic activity.

In another moment of national emergency, the Prime Minister announced live on March 12, 2019, the Balakot airstrikes, carried out in response to the Pulwama terror attack.

One of the most notable speeches was on November 8, 2016, when he announced the demonetization of ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes.

Today’s speech will be broadcast on Doordarshan as well as Network 18 group channels.
