PLAYER RATINGS: Erling Haaland is still shy on big nights… while Jude Bellingham has every blade of grass covered

Manchester City’s dreams of retaining the Champions League were shattered after a dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Real Madrid.

Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic both missed the penalty as City were beaten 4-3 on penalties after their thrilling quarter-final ended 4-4 on aggregate.

Rodrygo had given Real an early lead in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium, but City otherwise dominated and, after creating numerous chances, eventually made it 1-1 on the night through Kevin De Bruyne in the 76th minute.

De Bruyne missed a good chance to earn the tie in normal time and Erling Haaland had hit the crossbar earlier, but it was the competition’s record 14 winners that ultimately prevailed.

Mail Sport’s Pete Jenson assessed the players on Wednesday evening.

Manchester City (4-1-4-1)

Ederson – 6.5

The Brazilian could do nothing against the first goal and was largely a spectator afterward. Scored his penalty.

Kyle Walker – 7

Failed to stop Vinicius’ cross from reaching Rodrygo for the opening goal. But overall, he once again won his duel with the Brazilian.

Akanji Manual – 7

Carried the ball forward well. Tested Madrid with probing passes. Still available for the easy pass too.

Rubén Dias – 6.5

He couldn’t stop Vinicius from crossing from the right for the first goal of the game, but helped prevent Madrid from causing problems on the counter.

Josko Gvardiol – 7

Booked for foul on Bellingham. Strong defensive performance with epic extra time to keep Madrid at bay

Rodri – 7

The main victim of this brilliant control of Bellingham just before Real Madrid made the score 1-0 in the evening. He improved in the second half and started to run the game.

De Bruyne – 7.5

Such a boost to have him back for the second leg. He forced a good save from Lunin in the first half. Scored the equalizer but blazed when he could have doubled his total before extra time.

Bernardo Silva – 7

Always looking to invent. Caused problems with his movement and control. Great cross for Foden in injury time. Terrible penalty.

Phil Foden – 6.5

A long shot just before the end of a quiet first half. Missed from Silva’s cross in extra time, but still plenty of deep runs in injury time.

Jack Grealish – 6.5

He caused problems for Carvajal earlier and drew a yellow for the Spain international, but Doku had more end product when he arrived.

Erling Haaland – 6.5

The head hit the crossbar. Nice layoff for Grealish to come close as well. Always shy on big nights

Real Madrid (4-2-3-1)

Andrei Lunin – 8

Two saves on penalties after a performance which allowed Thibaut Courtois not to miss too much.

Dani Carvajal – 7.5

Booked for foul on Grealish. Superb header cleared in the first half. Showed his class and fighting spirit throughout.

Antonio Rüdiger – 7

Failed to clear the City goal. But the Real Madrid coach, in Militao’s absence, made a crucial challenge to block a Grealish shot in the first half. He could have scored in overtime. Then buried the winning penalty.

Nachos – 6

Never showed the talent of the suspended Aurélien Tchouameni in the distribution, but he was consistent and an important clearance at the start of the second half. He made a good shot on goal.

Ferland Mendy – 6.5

Didn’t create much threat going forward but immense defensively. Underrated except by Ancelotti who adores him.

Toni Kroos – 6.5

A pirouette to get away from Haaland in the first half was sublime. Finds another level in big games but has faded and been replaced.

Eduardo Camavinga – 6.5

Had Madrid’s first shot. I worked hard without shining.

Fede Valverde – 6

He did not make the most of the chances he had on the counterattack for Madrid with poor decisions during the final pass.

Jude Bellingham – 7

Control was out of reach at the time. Covered every blade of grass and played a huge role in scoring, but missed those breathtaking deep runs he had early in the season. Buried his penalty.

Rodrygo – 6.5

The Brazilian fox in the box. Love a goal in the Champions League, especially thanks to an assist from Vinicius. Faded out and was replaced by Brahim.

Vinicius Junior – 6.5

Chained by Walker at the bottom left. But he changed wings to score the first goal. It’s not his best night.
