Los Gatos-based nonprofit Plant-Based Advocates earned a certificate of commendation from Santa Clara County leaders and a community service award from environmental nonprofit Acterra on March 21.

Since its founding in 2022, Plant-Based Advocates has hosted cooking classes and lectures in collaboration with the Los Gatos Library, in addition to regular meetings and community outreach.
Transitioning to a plant-based food system is essential to ensuring a sustainable future, the group’s co-founder Karen Rubio said in a statement. “We find ourselves at a critical juncture in human history,” she added. “Humans and their farm animals now account for 96% of the planet’s mammal biomass, crowding out entire ecosystems and wildlife. »
