Photos show heavy rain and severe flooding in the United Arab Emirates

Storms and heavy rain caused flooding in some Gulf states, prompting the closure of Dubai airport, one of the world’s busiest, on Tuesday.

The UAE, generally known for its hot and sunny climate, reportedly received more than 100mm of rain in a 24-hour period, marking a record 75 years ago since the country began recording rainfall.

The local government also issued a red alert and closed offices, schools and banks. The storms hit other parts of the Middle East, killing at least 19 people in Oman due to flooding, according to local media.
