Christmas got a lot worse for this Grinch in New Hampshire Monday night — he crashed his car and surprised police officers who arrived to help him, officials said.
The driver, dressed in full Grinch costume, mask and all, had left Newfields Road around 5:50 p.m. and hit a sign and mailbox at The Word Barn, a local music venue. Photos from the scene shared by Exeter police on Wednesday show the Grinch perched in the driver’s seat of a damaged SUV and looking at his phone.
Investigators believe the Grinch, a 31-year-old resident named Jon C. Williamson, was distracted while driving around a curve, police said. Williamson denied being injured but was taken to hospital.
“This was certainly a unique situation. Officers never expected to arrive on scene to find an operator wearing a Grinch costume while driving, but it was Christmas Eve, so this was not the case. “Wasn’t entirely out of the realm of possibility. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured,” Exeter Police Chief Stephan Poulin said in a statement.
The police weren’t the only ones shocked. The Word Barn started a Facebook post about what happened with the phrase “what is this??”
They said the Christmas night accident destroyed a brand new sign, mailbox, honey stand and driveway lights.
“We are amazed and very happy that no one was hurt, but imagine our surprise when we ran outside to help and found… the Grinch!?! I can’t make this up,” they said, adding: “Take it easy.” out there, stay safe and hug your loved ones.
The crash was still under investigation Wednesday, police said.
