Philadelphia police officer in critical condition after being shot in Kensington; suspect in custody

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A suspected shooter is in custody after a Philadelphia police officer was shot and seriously injured Saturday night in the city’s Kensington neighborhood.

Police said two officers were conducting a traffic stop in the 3500 block of F Street just before 8 p.m., involving four individuals.

During this check, the police saw a case.

Police say that’s when a man ran from the scene and, in doing so, shot the officers three times.

One of the police officers was shot in the neck. His partner returned fire and then transported the injured officer to Temple University Hospital.

The officer who was shot is in critical condition in surgical intensive care.

Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel spoke outside Temple University Hospital Saturday evening.

“I often come here with a lot of anger about what my men and women have to endure. Today I come with a different request: Today I sat in an auditorium with about 75 to 100 men from Eastern Division and we held hands as Commissioner Stanford brought us together and we prayed for our officer,” Bethel said.

“So today I ask people across the city of Philadelphia to pray for our officer,” Bethel continued.

The name of the officer killed has not been released. Authorities say he is 31 years old and has six years of law enforcement experience.

In addition to the suspected shooter, the other people in the car are also in custody.
