Shane Lowry tied the lowest score in major championship history Saturday afternoon in Valhalla.
It’s moving day in Valhalla.
Saturday at the PGA Championship began with Xander Schauffele leading the field by one shot. He’s led all the way to this point, something only five other golfers have done in the last 40 years.
But his lead did not last. Collin Morikawa quickly passed him on the back nine, although the two both birdied the 18th to get to 15 under for the week. This gave them a one-shot lead in what is a very crowded leaderboard.
Shane Lowry also came close to setting a new record. He shot a 9-under 62, making him just the fifth player in major championship history to post that score in a round. That matches Schauffele’s course record at Valhalla that he set on Thursday and moved him to 13 under for the week — which was good for second place when he reached the clubhouse. Lowry narrowly missed a birdie putt at the 18th, which would have set the record.
Sahith Theegala is alone in third position heading into Sunday at 14 under. Bryson DeChambeau, who won the last one with a chip-in, and Viktor Hovland will join Lowry at 13 under.
Tiger Woods, however, is not in the mix. He fell to 7 after a rough start Friday and was among those who missed the cut. The good news is that the weather looks good after a long day of rain on Friday.

Shane Lowry tied the lowest score in major championship history Saturday afternoon in Valhalla.
Shane Lowry made a 12-foot putt for history. This wasn’t supposed to happen. If Lowry had birdied 18, he would have shot the first 61 in major golf history. He missed his match and will be content to equalize history with the fifth 62 in his history.
Shane Lowry: 5th round of 62 in men’s major championship history; four have come in the last 3 major tournaments
Lowry gained 6.4 strokes in today’s round, a career high. His 10.6 strokes gained putting this week are the most in 3 rounds ever recorded in a PGA Tour event in 2024.
