PGA Championship live updates, standings: Scottie Scheffler makes his turn after arrest, Collin Morikawa takes solo lead

Things were very chaotic at Valhalla Golf Club on Friday morning.

First, a fatal early morning traffic incident pushed back tee times for the second round of the PGA Championship. Next, top-ranked Scottie Scheffler was handcuffed and arrested after being caught trying to avoid traffic caused by the incident. Scheffler faces several charges, although attorneys told Yahoo Sports he is not likely to face a felony conviction and an officer was hospitalized during the incident.

Scheffler was released shortly after, and he returned to Valhalla to begin his second round as planned. He even made a birdie on his first hole and seemed in good spirits on the course. The whole situation, he said in a statement before his turn, was due to “a big misunderstanding.” Scheffler made the turn with his group at 6 under.

Xander Schauffele – who tied (his own) major record with a 9-under 62 in the first round, which was the lowest score in PGA Championship history – will tee off in the heat of the afternoon. He entered the day with a three-shot lead, although that quickly disappeared after Collin Morikawa made three consecutive birdies on his final nine to reach 10 under on the day.

Rory McIlroy will start his day four shots behind Schauffele. Tiger Woods, on the other hand, struggled with his finishing and ended up with a 1-over 72 on Thursday. He will have to fight to qualify on Friday.

Live40 updates

  • Xander Schauffele is absent…

When he woke up, Xander Schauffele was three shots ahead. When he started barely a minute ago, he trailed Colin Morikawa by three strokes. It’s time to catch up.

  • Slam dunk

Emiliano Grillo didn’t play the tournament he was hoping for — he was +3 out of 13 — but this will do:

  • Morikawa continues his ride

Make five consecutive birdies for Collin Morikawa, after converting a short 5-footer on No. 8 (his 17th hole). Morikawa went from two to a two-shot lead. Birdie x 5 will do that.

  • Who is Mark Hubbard?

Most know frontman Collin Morikawa. But who is “Hubbard,” who is now 10 under and in second place? Well, it’s Mark Hubbard, world number 81. Hubbard, 34, turned professional in 2012. Although he had one victory on the Korn Ferry Tour, he has never won on the main stage. This is only his fourth major tournament. His best finish: T51 at the 2020 PGA Championship. It’s safe to say he’s gearing up for the biggest payday of his career.

  • Scottie Scheffler’s legal battle

Scottie Scheffler, attorneys say, is unlikely to face any felony charges following his arrest Friday morning.
