Peter Oosterhuis, legendary golf commentator and former Ryder Cup star, has died aged 75

Former Ryder Cup player Peter Oosterhuis has died aged 75.

The Englishman, who played six Cup matches and twice beat Arnold Palmer in singles, had suffered from Alzheimer’s disease since 2014.

During a successful career, Oosterhuis topped the European Tour Order of Merit on four occasions between 1971 and 1974 and was twice runner-up at the Open, having also taken a three-stroke lead in the final round of the 1973 Masters.

After retiring from professional golf in the mid-1990s, Oosterhuis became one of the game’s most popular commentators on CBS in the United States.

A great storyteller, he once shared a memorable story following his halved singles match with Lee Trevino in the 1973 Ryder Cup at Muirfield.

Speaking to Golf Digest in 2015, Oosterhuis recalled: “Lee told his teammates, ‘If I don’t beat Oosterhuis, I’ll come here and kiss your butt.’ Lee didn’t beat me.

“When he entered the locker room, (Jack) Nicklaus, Gay Brewer and the other players were waiting with their pants around their ankles for the reward. Lee did not keep his promise.

Oosterhuis died a day before his 76th birthday.
