Person under plane’s flight path files 20,000 noise pollution complaints

A person living under a flight path in Western Australia is a prolific complainant.

In fact, their complaints made up almost half of all complaints about air traffic noise pollution lodged in Australia last year.

According to data provided by Airservices Australia, the unidentified person from Perth complained about noise from aircraft flying overhead 20,716 times last year.

The West Australian was one of the first media outlets to report on it.

In comparison, according to Airservices Australia data, the second-largest complainant in the Brisbane region lodged 4,071 complaints.

There were 51,589 total complaints last year, the data shows, more than double the 2022 total of 25,178.

Airservices Australia, responsible for air traffic management in Australian airspace, has submitted its submission to a Senate inquiry into the impact of aircraft noise on cities and regional centres.

People living below flight paths may be affected by traffic flying over them.

According to the United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority, noise pollution from aircraft can harm a person’s health and well-being.

In addition to causing general discomfort, research indicates that it can harm children’s academic performance, disrupt sleep quality and even increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, the CAA said.

Research on a specific airport in the United States, Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, found that loud aircraft noise also has financial implications on residents, due to lost productivity and the need to undergo medical treatment.

The study estimates that the combined medical burden for people living near the airport would be $800 million over 30 years.
