Person stabbed after argument on Los Angeles subway bus in University Park

A person was stabbed Friday afternoon after arguing with other passengers on a Los Angeles Metro bus in University Park, authorities said.

Police were dispatched to the area of Figueroa Way and Adams Boulevard around 12:35 a.m. after a stabbing, according to Los Angeles Police Department public information officer Rosario Cervantes.

The Los Angeles Fire Department also responded and the victim was transported to the hospital. No additional information about the victim was immediately available.

A suspect was arrested shortly after the incident, Cervantes said.

According to LA Metro spokesperson Patrick Chandler, there was an argument between three people on a bus and the driver stopped to allow them to get off.

“The argument continued onto the sidewalk and apparently resulted in a stabbing,” Chandler said in a statement. “The bus remains at the scene as passengers witness it.”

The stabbing is the latest in a series of violent incidents involving Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority passengers in recent weeks. Earlier this month, a bus driver was stabbed in the chest by a passenger. Less than 24 hours earlier, a 70-year-old passenger was stabbed by another passenger.

And earlier this week, Mirna Soza, 66, was fatally stabbed aboard a subway by a man who had once been banned from riding the train.

These incidents have forced leaders to ask themselves how to guarantee safe passage on public transport. Metro has discussed additional security measures such as creating its own police force or implementing facial recognition technology and fare barriers.

“Our agency is grappling with a very real and unacceptable level of violence, illicit drug use, sale and overdoses, and blatant disregard for the law, our code of conduct and, frankly, basic human decency,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who serves on the Los Angeles Metro Board of Directors. “Until we completely reverse the reality of security on our system, I fear we will never return.”
