BERKELEY – A possible collision involving a person in a wheelchair and a BART train was reported Monday afternoon in Berkeley, a spokesperson for the commuter rail line said.
The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. at the North Berkeley station, BART spokesman Jim Allison said in a recorded message.
Allison said first responders rescued one person and removed a wheelchair from the tracks.
“There could have been a collision involving the train, a wheelchair and possibly the individual as well,” Allison said. “We have no confirmed information on how the person entered the trail, but foul play is not suspected at this time.”
No update on the person’s condition was immediately available Monday afternoon.
BART police are investigating the incident, Allison said.
The incident caused the North Berkeley BART station to be closed until about 4:30 p.m., and service on the Orange and Red lines did not fully resume until around 4:50 p.m., Allison said.
