A person fell from the bleachers to his death Sunday during Ohio State University’s graduation ceremony, according to university officials. The fall happened around noon, near where the final graduates were entering Ohio Stadium, the Columbus Dispatch reported.
The police cordoned off the area. It was not immediately clear whether the fall was accidental or intentional, or whether it was a student or someone else.
University spokesman Benjamin Johnson said in an emailed statement that the university was aware of the death but had no additional information to share about what happened.
Some students and others at the ceremony were visibly upset. The beginning continued and the speakers did not mention what happened.
“For anyone affected by today’s incident, we will make counseling and other support resources available,” a spokesperson said in a statement, according to CBS affiliate WBNS.
According to the university, 12,555 students received their diploma or certificate in person, the station reported.
The university has recently faced protests related to the war in Gaza that have disrupted campuses nationwide. More than three dozen Ohio State students and protesters are facing misdemeanor charges following the university’s Thursday night crackdown on protests against investment in Israel.
