One person has been declared dead after being withdrawn from the English Channel, French authorities said.

One person was found overboard and unconscious in the early hours of Friday after a boat believed to be heading for the UK found itself in trouble off the French coast.

Twenty-five people were found on the boat and were recovered by rescue teams, while five others were found on a sandbank. The unconscious person was taken ashore but was pronounced dead.

An investigation was opened by the prosecution of Boulogne-sur-Mer.

The latest dangerous crossing attempts come despite sub-zero temperatures on the French coast, with at least one boat reaching the UK.

Several border force ships were active in the English Channel.

The death comes after at least 271 people aboard 10 small boats reached Britain on Thursday, including a young child. So far this year, more than 450 people have taken the life-threatening trip in small boats after a record year in 2021.

Mike Adamson, Managing Director of the British Red Cross, said: “It is devastating to hear that another person has lost their life trying to cross the Channel. Our thoughts are with them and their loved ones, who may not even know what happened yet. This loss comes far too soon after the deaths of 27 people at the end of last year.

“Every death in the Channel is a tragedy. It should be unacceptable to us that people have to make dangerous crossings in icy conditions in search of safety. No one puts their life on the line like this unless they feel like they have no other choice and are completely desperate.

“There are no simple answers, but we are urging the government to rethink its plans to make Britain’s asylum system more difficult to access. It should start with ambitious plans for new safe roads and a commitment to resettle 10,000 people per year. “
