But the Champions League has once again eluded them

The Premier League leaders suffered a stunning late comeback against Real Madrid, who scored twice in the dying moments and won their semi-final in extra time.

Trying to explain how a dominant city has once again failed in Europe, former United defender Patrice Evra said: “Manchester City need leaders, but Guardiola don’t want leaders.

“He doesn’t want a personality. He’s the boss. That’s why when they’re in trouble, they don’t want to. They have no one on the ground to help them.

Evra’s former United team-mate Dimitar Berbatov echoed those thoughts, as did Dutch legend Clarence Seedorf.

Berbatov said: “If a small team, which doesn’t have a lot of talent and class, concedes two goals at the end of the game, we’ll say it’s because they are a small team with a small state of play. spirit and without a winning mentality.”

And Seedorf said: “Manchester City, like PSG, lack a mentality. The mentality of Real Madrid is not created in a year or two or even ten.

Guardiola had a message for Evra and co.

“It’s about coming to a club where you know you’re part of something much bigger than yourself.”

Asked about those comments, Guardiola pointed out that the same players had since cemented City’s place at the top of the Premier League table, despite intense pressure from Liverpool.

The Spaniard also highlighted his past encounters with the aforementioned players, including the 2011 Champions League final between his Barcelona side and United.

Berbatov didn’t play but Evra was involved as Barca cruised to a 3-1 win at Wembley Stadium.

“The answer is so simple,” Guardiola said. “These are the same characters and personalities that lost to Madrid in the last two or three minutes.

“The former specialist players – like Seedorf, Berbatov and Evra – those kind of people, they were there and I played against them.

Ex-Barcelona boss wanted to remind Evra of defeat

“And I didn’t see when we were playing against them that personality, when we destroyed them in the Champions League final against United.

“It’s the same character and the same personality. You can’t have no personality when you concede two goals in one minute, when you have two chances to score.

“After the last four games, when we score 22 goals, we are incredible personalities and that kind of thing!”
