Pep Guardiola dethrones Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson as Erling Haaland’s hat-trick makes history

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola made Premier League history with a 3-1 win over West Ham, dethroning Sir Alex Ferguson.

Erling Haaland scored a superb hat-trick, narrowly missing out on scoring with his second goal to complete his second hat-trick in a row.

The result means Guardiola has not been beaten by West Ham in any of the 17 games he has managed against them.

It is now the most games a manager has played against a specific opponent without losing to them in Premier League history.

Before the clash at the London Stadium, Guardiola had won 14 and drawn two against the Hammers.

And this has now been followed by an imperial demonstration in east London.

Haaland’s hat-trick also made history: it means the club have scored more hat-tricks (43) than any other club since 1992.

The Norwegian has also now scored more goals after three Premier League games (7) than any other player.

In total, that’s 70 goals in 69 league appearances for the champions.

It could have been much worse for West Ham too, Alphonse Areola – substituted at half-time – made a number of good saves, with one hold denying Kevin De Bruyne a wonderful goal.

The Belgian also hit the post in the first half before the Hammers gave Manchester City a few scares with Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus two ever-present threats.

However, the Premier League title holder kept his rivals at bay and helped his manager make history.

Guardiola was tied on a 16-match unbeaten run alongside legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The iconic Red Devils manager went undefeated in 16 meetings with Charlton between 1998 and 2009 – also winning 14 and drawing two.

Manchester City’s victory also had the added benefit of sending them back to the top of the Premier League.

Why does Manchester City star Phil Foden wear number 47?

Arsenal squandered the chance to take an early lead as they held their side to a 1-1 draw with fellow rivals Brighton.

The match was not without controversy, however, as Declan Rice was sent off for two yellow card offences.

The second of these exploits came when he kicked the ball to delay the Seagulls’ quick free-kick.

Liverpool are the only team who can possibly get the better of City this weekend as they take on Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Arne Slot’s team would have to win by three goals against their rivals to take first place.
